Murfreesboro History
Around 1811, what started as 60 acres of land that belonged to Captain William Lytle became a town called "Cannonsburgh". At the time it was in honor of a civil war politician named Newton Cannon of Williamson County, but Captain Lytle decided to honor the memory of friend by asking the town to be renamed "Murfreesbourough", only a month later. Due to it's central location, "Murfreesboro" was named the capital of Tennessee only a year after being recognized as an official city by the State Legislature. Nashville, several years later, regained it's title as State capital.
Even though the community was mainly known for it's agricultural benefits...(corn, cotton, and tobacco), Murfreesboro was also home to several collegs and other places of education. It became known as the "Athen of Tennessee". During the Civil War, education suffered due to the trauma and occupation of the military in the area, but slowly began to regain it's momentum.
Soon after WWII, the towns in Rutherford County began to switch from agriculture to a more industrial based economy. Growth has been steady since this change.
